Pramono says Jakarta economy resilient with 5.52 percent growth in Q2

Jakarta's economy showed resilience in the second quarter of 2026, recording a growth rate of 5.52 percent, according to Governor Pramono Anung. The capital city contributed 16.32 percent to Indonesia’s gross domestic product (GDP) during this period, reflecting its continued importance in the national economy. Pramono made these remarks during a ceremony commemorating the 81st anniversary of Indonesia’s independence at Jakarta City Hall in Central Jakarta. The governor emphasized that Jakarta’s economic performance was supported by controlled inflation, which stood at 2.5 percent. He stated that this stability would aid the city’s goal of becoming one of the world’s top 50 global cities by 2030. Pramono highlighted the need for inclusive growth, stressing that economic expansion should lead to broader opportunities and reduced disparities among residents. During his address, Pramono outlined several initiatives aimed at improving human development within the city. These included expanding access to education and enhancing welfare through programs such as the Jakarta Smart Card (KJP) Plus and the Jakarta Achievement Scholarship Card (KJMU). Additionally, efforts were underway to eliminate fees associated with diploma issuance and to support labor-intensive projects alongside the Sekolah Rakyat, or People’s School, initiative. Pramono reiterated that progress in Jakarta should prioritize its citizens. He argued that increasing access to education and improving living standards are essential to breaking cycles of disadvantage. This focus on inclusivity aligns with broader goals of ensuring that all residents benefit from the city’s development. Environmental sustainability has also been a key component of Jakarta’s strategy. Initiatives include promoting waste sorting at the source, optimizing Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R) waste processing facilities, and preparing for the dry season. These measures aim to enhance the city’s ecological footprint and ensure sustainable urban management. Governance reforms are another area of focus for the Jakarta administration. New financing mechanisms, such as municipal bonds, are being explored to support development projects. The city has maintained an unqualified opinion from Indonesia’s Audit Board (BPK) for nine consecutive years, indicating strong fiscal management and accountability. Pramono concluded his speech by linking Jakarta’s achievements to the spirit of independence. He noted that the city’s governance should reflect the values of protection, safety, comfort, and community ownership. The phrase “Jaga Jakarta” encapsulates the collective responsibility of residents to care for their city. Indonesia has announced plans for an international conference focused on the growth of Greater Jakarta, signaling increased attention to the region’s development potential. Meanwhile, Jakarta’s governor has set a target of achieving a six percent economic growth rate, underscoring the city’s ambitions for sustained prosperity.
