Prabowo reviews wildfire situation to determine containment strategy

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has convened a critical meeting in Kubu Raya District, West Kalimantan, to assess the current status of wildfires sweeping through the region and formulate a strategic approach to contain them. These hotspots were predominantly concentrated in the southern regions, specifically in the districts of Ketapang, Kubu Raya, and North Kayong. Additional significant activity was noted in Sanggau, Sintang, and Sambas districts. Weather conditions were also discussed during the meeting, as they significantly influence fire behavior and suppression strategies. Light rain is anticipated in eastern parts of West Kalimantan between August 21 and 27, which could aid in reducing the intensity of the fires. However, prior attempts at weather modification had been suspended due to adverse cloud formations observed between August 11 and 18. Plans are underway to restart these operations between August 23 and 27, pending approval from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). This decision reflects the ongoing efforts to leverage environmental factors in mitigating the spread of wildfires.
