Important Paleontological Discovery at Idrija: "I knew there was something special"

A significant paleontological discovery was made in the Upper Idrijca Landscape Park near Idrija, Slovenia, where a 235 million-year-old tooth of a marine reptile called a placoderm has been found. This fossil, identified by the Ivan Rakovc Institute for Paleontology at the ZRC SAZU research center, is believed to be the largest of its kind from this period. The tooth belongs to a placoderm, a type of armored fish-like creature that lived in shallow coastal waters of the ancient Tethys Ocean during the Triassic period. The find is notable for its excellent preservation and rarity, offering insights into the evolution of these animals and enhancing the recognition of the landscape park. The tooth was discovered by Gregor Koželj, a nature conservation officer and amateur researcher, who kept the exact location confidential to protect the site from unauthorized exploration.

An extraordinarily large tooth of a 235-million-year-old marine reptile has been found off Idrija

Najdba prispeva k razumevanju evolucije teh živali in njihove razširjenosti v preteklosti.
