A survey conducted by the Economist/YouGov between July 17–20, 2026, found that 43% of U.S. adults view communists in the country as posing at least a moderate threat. Specifically, 18% saw them as a 'major' threat, while 25% viewed them as 'moderate.' The remaining 23% considered the threat 'minor,' and 33% believed there was no threat at all. Republicans were more likely to perceive a threat, with 64% seeing at least a moderate danger, compared to 22% of Democrats and 25% of independents. The survey included 1,602 U.S. adults with a ±3.3% margin of error. President Trump criticized the Democratic Party's shift toward progressive policies, claiming it risks undermining American values and echoing historical patterns of leftist movements leading to societal decline.
