Swedish police order TikTok and Meta to remove ads from criminal services; gangs use social media to recruit teenagers

The Swedish police have ordered TikTok and Meta to remove 30 posts offering payment for criminal services since mid-July, citing concerns over gangs using social media to recruit teenagers. The directive comes amid growing efforts to combat rising gang violence linked primarily to retaliation and drug market disputes. The order was issued under new legislation enacted on July 15, which allows authorities to demand platforms remove online recruitment content within one hour. According to a police spokesperson, the agency has sent 30 such orders, 29 to TikTok and one to Meta, and all platforms have complied. Despite this, the police continue to urge greater awareness and stronger content monitoring by tech companies. Swedish gangs typically use social media and encrypted messaging apps to target adolescents, offering them money for crimes including murder. These youths are often promised leniency if arrested, making the lure particularly potent for young people seeking financial gain. The police warn that while the amounts offered can range from around 10,000 kronor (approximately $1,000) to several million kronor depending on the crime, these figures are rarely realized. The spokesperson noted that such promises are used to attract youth into criminal activity, with very few instances of actual payments being made. Gangs operate with a methodical approach: initial recruitment ads appear openly on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, or Snapchat. When a teenager responds, the conversation shifts to encrypted messaging services, allowing for more discreet coordination. This strategy enables criminals to maintain a low profile while still effectively recruiting new members. The issue has gained attention as part of broader concerns about youth involvement in organized crime. A recent parliamentary vote approved lowering the age of criminal responsibility from 15 to 14 years, effective September 10. This change reflects increasing recognition of the role minors play in violent offenses and aims to address the legal framework surrounding juvenile participation in crime. Authorities emphasize that while the immediate removal of harmful content is crucial, long-term solutions require collaboration between law enforcement and technology firms. Enhanced monitoring and faster response mechanisms could help prevent the spread of such recruitment materials.
