Construction companies operating in the state have been instructed to halt active construction work due to safety concerns, with only recognized security agencies and organizations under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) permitted to provide security at polling units, collation centers, and other election facilities.
The announcement comes amid heightened security concerns in Ekiti and neighboring regions, where kidnapping and banditry have become increasingly prevalent. This issue has gained particular traction in the northwestern and central parts of the country, where armed groups have turned abduction into a lucrative business. From 2018 to 2023, bandits in the northwest killed more people than the combined toll of Islamic West Africa Province and Boko Haram in the northeast. Following this, a follow-up raid was executed on 11 June, resulting in the arrest of four suspects—Yahaya Abdullahi, Muhammed Yunusa, Hauwa Shafiu, and Shamsudeen Mustapha. Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects were part of a coordinated criminal network involved in kidnapping and banditry activities within the FCT and adjacent states. The police dismantled a suspected terrorist camp in the area, destroying makeshift shelters and storage facilities used by the group. One of the suspects, Hauwa Shafiu, was found to be pregnant at the time of her arrest and has since given birth while in custody, receiving appropriate medical care for herself and her newborn.

Governor Monday Okpebholo has directed security agencies to identify and apprehend those responsible for the crime. The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Patrick Ebojele, confirmed that the investigation is underway and that the matter is being treated with urgency. He warned against the sensationalization of security incidents on social media, emphasizing that such actions can hinder ongoing operations. Despite the challenges, the governor has made significant investments in security personnel, equipment, and intelligence gathering since taking office. As part of a broader security strategy, the recruitment of local forest guards from communities and local government areas aims to enhance surveillance in rural areas and protect farmers from criminal activities.
