Police arrest 5 suspected drug dealers, recover illicit substances

Police in Akwa Ibom State have arrested five individuals suspected of involvement in drug trafficking and recovered substantial amounts of illicit substances during a targeted raid in Mbak Itam, Ikot Mbang. The operation took place on Tuesday and followed credible intelligence leading to the discovery of a suspected criminal hideout. According to a statement issued by the police spokesperson, Timfon John, a deputy superintendent of police, the raid was part of the ongoing “Zero Black Spot” initiative led by the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare. This initiative focuses on identifying and dismantling criminal networks operating within the state. The five individuals apprehended during the operation were identified as Abraham Emmanuel, Happiness Archibong, Esther Okon, Esther Udo, and Chinedu Benjamin. During the raid, police seized large quantities of substances believed to include Indian hemp, tramadol, loud, and ice. Additionally, they recovered ₦42,000, which is suspected to be proceeds linked to the illegal drug trade. Several other suspects reportedly fled the scene upon seeing the police vehicle. Timfon John emphasized that the operation demonstrated the dedication and professionalism of the officers involved, noting their “courage, vigilance and commitment to duty.” She stated that Commissioner Azare expressed commendation for the efforts of the personnel and reiterated the need for continued intelligence-driven actions against criminal elements, especially in remote areas often used for drug trafficking, cultism, and violent crimes. The statement further clarified that the police command has made it clear there will be no safe havens for criminals in Akwa Ibom State. The “Zero Black Spot” initiative is described as a strategic effort to “identify, disrupt and dismantle locations being used to facilitate criminal activities,” with the dual purpose of enhancing community safety and restoring public trust. Earlier this year, police successfully intercepted and detained three individuals accused of participating in armed robberies and cult-related activities. In June, an intelligence-led operation in Ibeno resulted in the seizure of a locally manufactured pistol and substances suspected to be Indian hemp, based on reports of concealed and distributed illicit narcotics.
