Relations between Germany and Russia deteriorate after the Leipzig attack

Germany has escalated tensions with Russia following a suspected cyberattack attributed to Russian agents near the Leipzig/Halle airport, according to reports from German authorities. The attack occurred during the night of August 4–5, when two Ukrainian military transport planes were parked on the runway at the airport, which serves as a key logistics hub for Kyiv’s armed forces. A drone was found among the Antonov aircraft, though it failed to explode due to a faulty detonator. Investigations by German intelligence agencies and police suggest that two additional drones may have landed within the secure area of the airport. The German federal government has officially blamed the Russian Federation for the attack, citing evidence pointing to individuals acting under state sponsorship. The incident marks another instance of so-called hybrid warfare targeting Germany's infrastructure, with similar attacks recorded over recent months. These include explosions at power stations near thermal power plants in eastern Germany and sabotage at a transformer station in western regions. According to Alexander Dobrindt, Minister of the Interior, the execution of this attempted attack could be traced back to lower-level operatives, aligning with known patterns of Russian hybrid operations in Europe. Intelligence assessments indicate involvement of individuals linked to Russian state agencies, further supporting the accusations against Moscow. In response, the German government has summoned the Russian ambassador to Berlin for urgent consultations. It has ordered the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and plans to terminate the agreement for the Russian House in Berlin, which many claim has been used for espionage and propaganda. Stricter controls on entry for Russian citizens and increased pressure on the so-called "shadow fleet", old Soviet-era tankers flying under third-country flags, have also been announced. These vessels, operated by Russia to bypass Western sanctions, remain a point of contention. German officials argue that the attack reflects a deliberate effort by Russian leadership to exacerbate already strained bilateral relations. Johann Wadephul, Germany’s Foreign Minister, described the behavior of the Russian Federation as part of its long-standing pattern of destabilization, disinformation, threats, sabotage, and aggression toward Europe. The German investigation has identified two suspects connected to the attack: a man born in Russia with a Latvian passport, and another from Belarus with a Russian passport. However, the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung reported that these suspects may not be detained due to legal complexities. Russia has rejected all allegations, calling them unfounded. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that German actions will provoke a strong response, while President Vladimir Putin accused Berlin of fabricating evidence to blame Russia for the attack. He criticized Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government for diverting attention away from domestic issues and declining public trust, suggesting that the accusations are politically motivated. Putin claimed that Germany is using the incident to shift focus from internal economic failures, including rising unemployment and falling living standards. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, warned that the Russian-controlled airspace has become increasingly dangerous, highlighting the broader context of escalating hostilities. Reports from Associated Press indicate that since the invasion of Ukraine, around 200 incidents of sabotage and malicious activities have been documented across Europe, with Western officials attributing these acts to Russian-backed actors. These include organized arson attacks, drone launches, and attempts to assassinate opponents. The situation underscores the ongoing challenges of countering hybrid threats and maintaining security in a region already fraught with geopolitical instability.
