Contrary to popular belief, algae are not simply underwater grasses. While they may appear similar, there is a fundamental difference between algae and true seagrasses. Seagrasses are flowering plants with roots, leaves, flowers, and seeds, whereas algae lack these structures and do not flower. In the Slovenian Sea, five species of seagrass exist, with one notable species blooming only once every five to ten years. This rare occurrence makes its flowering a significant event in marine ecology. Under certain conditions, some algae can proliferate rapidly, causing the sea to turn reddish or even glow at night. Such phenomena, while uncommon, can occasionally be observed along the Slovenian coastline.
