After the closure of the New Village garage, there's no hope.

Residents in the area between Klinetova Street and Pohorski Odred Street in Nova Vas have been left without viable solutions after the closure of a garage building that once accommodated over 100 vehicles daily. The issue came to light through the efforts of municipal councillor Ljubica Jančič, who raised concerns during a recent regular session of the City Council of Maribor. Her remarks followed months of unresolved parking difficulties, with no alternative parking spaces provided by the municipality. The lack of replacement parking areas has forced local residents to park in front of other buildings, disrupting the parking rights of nearby apartment dwellers who also rely on these spaces. Councillor Jančič called upon Mayor Arsenovič to ensure that adequate parking facilities are made available without fear of fines from city traffic enforcement. She also proposed that the municipality remove the damaged garage and repurpose the space for parking purposes. However, the Municipality of Maribor clarified in its response that the closure of the garage was mandated by a state inspection authority due to identified unsafe conditions. As such, the use of the building is currently prohibited. This explains why the municipality has not yet been able to provide alternative parking options. In addition, ongoing legal proceedings have hindered progress. The municipality stated that potential solutions for new parking arrangements were examined, but they found that due to open procedures regarding land ownership under the Law on the Establishment of Floor Ownership and Determination of Land Use (ZVEtL-1), it is currently impossible to plan or implement new parking layouts near the closed garage. These procedures involve determining the land use status of properties in close proximity to the affected site. Given this situation, the Municipality of Maribor indicated that decisions regarding the future of the garage or possible removal of the structure will be made only after the completion of these legal processes and the clarification of all related legal and ownership issues concerning the property and land. The unresolved parking crisis continues to affect daily life for many residents, highlighting the need for a comprehensive solution that addresses both immediate and long-term parking demands. Until further developments occur, the community remains without clear alternatives, underscoring the complexity of urban planning and regulatory compliance in addressing public infrastructure challenges.
