The Triglav Glacier in the Julian Alps has shrunk to just a few remaining ice fragments, which researchers estimate could disappear by the end of this year's melting season. According to experts from the Anton Melik Geographical Institute at ZRC SAZU, after 80 years of systematic measurements, they are now tracking the glacier's actual disappearance rather than just its retreat. The glacier's decline is attributed to a thin snow cover, early snowmelt, and unusually high summer temperatures. Similarly, the Skuto Glacier in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps has fragmented into separate ice patches. This rapid melting reflects broader climate changes in the Alps, where warming is occurring two to three times faster than the global average. Researchers emphasize the importance of long-term scientific observations, noting that short-term data would underestimate the extent of glacial loss.
