After 74 years, the wreckage of a lost aircraft that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the northern coast of Puerto Rico has been found. The plane, a Douglas DC-4 operated by Pan American Airways, went down on April 11, 1952, during a flight from San Juan to New York. At the time, 64 passengers and five crew members were aboard. Both engines on the right side failed shortly after takeoff, prompting the pilot to make an emergency water landing. Although all passengers on deck survived the crash, the plane quickly sank. Despite being equipped with life rafts and life jackets, many passengers remained seated. According to the Pan Am Historical Foundation, 52 people perished along with the aircraft, while 17 survivors were rescued. The area of the crash was known for decades, but the exact location of the wreckage had remained a mystery until this year. In June, the Air/Sea Heritage Foundation, working with Deep Sea Vision and the team from the television show Expedition Unknown on Discovery, located the site using an autonomous underwater drone. The plane was discovered approximately 600 meters below the surface on June 2nd. The wreckage was found in two pieces, and its identity was confirmed through underwater footage showing the unmistakable Pan Am logo with wings and the clearly legible name “Clipper Endeavor.” The discovery has sparked renewed interest in the history of aviation disasters and the challenges of deep-sea exploration. The Air/Sea Heritage Foundation, in collaboration with local authorities in Puerto Rico, is preparing measures to protect the crash site and is seeking to establish a memorial in memory of the victims. They have also reached out to the families of the deceased and to two survivors who are still alive today. The Discovery Channel plans to feature the story of the find in one of its upcoming episodes of Expedition Unknown. The search for the wreckage began several months ago, following extensive research and mapping efforts. The team used advanced sonar technology and remotely operated vehicles to scan the seabed in the suspected area. The drone’s ability to navigate the depths and capture high-resolution images proved crucial in identifying the wreck.
