PNP tightens security as Uplift aid reaches millions of Filipinos

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified security efforts across the country as the government's Uplift aid program begins reaching millions of Filipinos. The expanded initiative, part of the Unified Package for Livelihood, Industry, Food and Transport, aims to provide financial relief to vulnerable households amid ongoing economic challenges linked to the Middle East crisis. According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the program covers 3.5 million households enrolled in the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) and the Walang Gutom Program (WGP). An additional 2.5 million poor and near-poor households, identified via the Philippine Statistics Authority’s Community-Based Monitoring System (CBMS), and 1.5 million low-income members of the Social Security System are also included in the aid rollout. General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., head of the PNP, issued directives on Monday instructing police units to deploy more personnel at distribution centers to safeguard the aid process and maintain public order. The directive emphasized the need for real-time security adjustments and continuous monitoring of intelligence reports related to potential disturbances. Local police commanders were also told to prepare for non-security contingencies, such as medical emergencies that might occur during aid distribution. Nartatez stressed that the PNP's role extends beyond ensuring safety to offering reassurance to beneficiaries that help will be available should they face unexpected issues. Under the Uplift program, households identified through the CBMS under Group 2 and eligible Social Security System members under Group 3 will receive P2,000 monthly from July to December. Meanwhile, 4Ps beneficiaries will have their assistance transferred directly into their Land Bank of the Philippines or GCash accounts. Those enrolled in the WGP will receive cash aid manually during their scheduled food redemption days. This multi-tiered approach ensures that different groups receive aid tailored to their specific needs and access methods. The DSWD announced earlier this week that the Uplift program marks the latest phase of financial support for Filipinos impacted by the current energy emergency. The aid comes as part of broader government efforts to stabilize livelihoods and address rising living costs. The inclusion of both existing welfare programs and newly identified households underscores the scale of the challenge facing the nation. Police commanders have been tasked with coordinating closely with local government units to ensure the smooth execution of the aid distribution across all regions.
