Gov’t mulls EU presidency as election issue

Greece's Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has confirmed that the country will submit a bid to host the 2028 European Men’s Water Polo Championship. The announcement was made following a request from the Hellenic Swimming Federation, according to a statement released by the prime minister’s office. Mitsotakis highlighted the move as a continuation of Greece’s growing influence in international sports, particularly in aquatic disciplines. The decision comes on the heels of Greece’s national men’s water polo team winning the World Cup earlier this year. In a social media post, Mitsotakis praised the team’s success and specifically commended athletes Apostolos Christou and Apostolos Siskos for their contributions to elevating Greek aquatic sports to new heights. He noted that the entire national swimming team played a crucial role in securing these achievements. Negotiations over the MFF have been ongoing since July 2025, when the European Commission presented a proposal for a seven-year budget totaling €2 trillion. Despite extensive discussions, no consensus has yet been reached among member states. Disagreements persist over how funds should be allocated, with some nations advocating for reduced spending on traditional sectors like agriculture and fisheries, while others, including Greece, argue for maintaining support for cohesion and development programs. The current phase of talks is expected to conclude by the end of 2026. However, even if an initial agreement is reached, the final political decision is anticipated to occur during Greece’s EU presidency, starting in July 2027. Government representatives are actively preparing for these negotiations, recognizing the strategic importance of securing a favorable outcome during their term in office. Mitsotakis has frequently referenced the significance of the EU presidency, stating that it presents an opportunity for Greece to assert itself on the European stage.
