Pirc Musar on the 'tsunami of disinformation', Mezeg: She bears part of the responsibility herself

President of Slovenia Nataša Pirc Musar has acknowledged the ongoing public speculation and misinformation surrounding the traffic accident she was involved in, which continues to raise questions and generate responses from the public. In a Facebook post, President Pirc Musar admitted that she cannot stop the wave of speculation and false information following the incident. She emphasized that despite her high office, she is still a human being, and her close family, friends, and security personnel are also struggling with the consequences of the event. She reiterated her mistake in not wearing a seatbelt during the crash and stated that she will pay the fine. The incident has sparked discussions among media figures, including former financial officer and lawyer Vera Mejak and journalist Domen Mezek for Domovina. Mejak expressed concern regarding individuals with Russian citizenship operating within Slovenia, citing recent cases of Russian intelligence operatives who were later involved in prisoner exchanges with Russia. She warned that caution should be exercised when dealing with Russian citizens, noting that two such individuals were identified living in Crenče, and later welcomed back into Russia by President Vladimir Putin. Meanwhile, Mezek highlighted the balance between privacy and public responsibility, stating that while the president has a right to personal space, her public role inherently involves greater exposure. He noted that the president’s private life, including her social circle, could influence her public standing, particularly concerning health and relationships. He pointed out that the mentioned companion, who holds both Slovenian and Russian citizenship, had been subjected to security checks upon obtaining Slovenian nationality, thus adhering to legal procedures. Mezek further stressed the importance of timely and clear communication after such incidents, arguing that the lack of basic information allows room for conspiracy theories and disinformation. He suggested that more transparent early disclosure could have prevented some of the subsequent speculation. He also indicated that the current situation underscores the need for clearer communication strategies to prevent misinformation from taking hold. The discussion has also touched on the issue of the president's protection. Interior Minister Franci Matoz confirmed to POP TV that he has been in contact with President Pirc Musar and that they are discussing potential changes to her security arrangements. Currently, police officers are stationed at her office to ensure her safety. Any changes to the protective measures would require proposals from the president herself, followed by decisions made by the government. Vera Mejak expressed surprise at the possibility of the president traveling without police escort, especially given her position as the head of state. She remarked that the president deserves respect, protection, and care, and found it alarming that this level of security might be compromised. The conversation around the incident highlights broader concerns about transparency, accountability, and the balance between public service and personal privacy.
