A total of 105 individuals applied for one or more of the 13 leadership positions within the Austrian public broadcaster ORF, according to the newly appointed General Director Clemens Pig. Some candidates submitted applications for multiple roles, resulting in a total of 142 applications. Pig stated that approximately half of the applicants come from within ORF, while the other half are external candidates. Interest was particularly high for the new position of Director “Audience & Platforms,” which has been created as part of the restructuring efforts. Pig described the number of applications as a “strong sign” of a vibrant, attractive, and forward-looking ORF. The application period for the four central directorates, “Audience and Platforms,” “Finance and Administration,” “Programming and Brands,” and “Technology and Innovation”, as well as the nine regional directorates, ended overnight on July 15. On July 16, Pig confirmed that the formal requirements of the applications were reviewed. The creation of shortlists will take place during the current week, with interviews scheduled to begin on July 27. Nominations along with supporting justifications will be delivered to the ORF Foundation Council starting August 3. The final decision on whether Pig’s proposed team will be appointed is expected in a council meeting on August 11. To ensure compliance with the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA), the ORF Act, and the Foundation Council's rules of procedure, Pig has relied on a scoring matrix for evaluating candidates. This matrix includes different criteria under the categories of “Basic Requirements,” “Functional Requirements,” and “Management Requirements.” While the criteria for the regional directorates remain consistent, they vary for the four central directorates due to specific job-related demands. Pig emphasized the importance of achieving gender balance among the selected candidates, noting that around 60 percent of the applicants are men and 40 percent are women. Two external experts have been brought into the selection process to assist with shortlisting and conducting interviews. These consultants are Kathrin Schulte, based in Hamburg, who specializes in human resources executive search and leadership assessment, and Bakel Walden from Zurich, an expert in digital transformation and public value. Their involvement aims to enhance the objectivity and transparency of the hiring process. The recruitment process reflects broader changes within ORF, including a shift towards modernizing its operations and adapting to evolving media landscapes. The emphasis on diversity and inclusion is evident in Pig’s commitment to balancing the gender composition of the leadership team. With such a large pool of candidates, the selection process is likely to be rigorous, ensuring that the chosen leaders are well-equipped to navigate the challenges facing public broadcasting in Austria today. The outcome of this selection will shape the future direction of ORF, influencing how it engages with audiences, manages its finances, develops programming, and leverages technology. As the deadline for the final decision approaches, all eyes will be on the ORF Foundation Council to see whether Pig’s vision for a balanced and capable leadership team becomes reality.
