Philadelphia woman says she used stage combat training to fight off masked man chasing residents

A man wearing a Chucky-style Halloween mask chased pedestrians in Philadelphia before encountering a woman who used her stage combat training to fend him off, according to multiple reports. The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 12, when Jameka Wilson, a 25-year-old Philadelphia-based actress, was heading to an early morning workout class. She became the target of the masked individual, who authorities later identified as 22-year-old Zymire Hughes. Wilson described how she noticed the man approaching another woman across the street, who was engrossed in her phone. Recognizing the potential danger, Wilson intervened by waving her arms and shouting a warning. The woman responded by fleeing, prompting the masked man to shift his attention toward Wilson. As he pursued her, Wilson decided to confront him directly, using techniques learned from her art school training in stage combat. “I saw his head like tilt from side to side, like trying to figure out what he's supposed to be doing in the scenario,” Wilson explained in an interview. She noted that the man appeared taken aback when she turned around and confronted him. “Essentially what he did in defense terms was that he opened up all of the lines of attack that I could possibly make to him,” she said. Wilson then delivered a strike to the man’s chest, effectively disarming him. Wilson credited her ability to assess the situation and respond swiftly to her education in stage combat. “My alma mater was the University of the Arts, and I trained with fight masters there for stage combat,” she said. “The whole goal is to understand what the consequences of contact and violence are and hopefully keep your scene partner safe.” She emphasized that the experience, though unusual, underscored the practical applications of her training. Authorities confirmed that Hughes, who was wearing a white baby doll-style Halloween mask with black hair, was involved in multiple encounters throughout the day. Surveillance footage showed him chasing individuals near City Hall, including a 40-year-old woman, whom he reportedly threatened with remarks such as asking if she was “ready to die.” During one instance, Hughes was seen refusing service at a Dunkin’ due to his mask and exhibited erratic behavior before leaving the establishment. Philadelphia Police Capt. Jason Smith stated that Hughes managed to approach numerous people, although most victims have not come forward. “He was able to accost a good many of people, most of which haven’t come forward yet,” Smith said.
