Peugeot is preparing a major revolution with its popular SUV, set to undergo a complete transformation. The new model will not only feature a different design but also introduce a completely new platform, advanced technologies, and the elimination of internal combustion engines. Scheduled to arrive in 2028, the vehicle will be based on Stellantis' new electric platform, STLA One, designed specifically for compact electric models within the group. This platform aims to enhance energy efficiency, reduce production costs, and significantly increase range. The first car to utilize this new platform is expected to be the upcoming generation of the Peugeot 208, which is anticipated to debut in 2027. Following this, the new Peugeot 2008 will follow. The new generation will be slightly shorter than the current model, which measures around 4.30 meters, making it one of the largest in the B-SUV segment. The new version is projected to be approximately 4.20 meters long, bringing it closer to competitors such as the Toyota C-HR and Volkswagen T-Roc. Despite the reduced exterior dimensions, Peugeot plans to maintain or even improve cabin space. This will be achieved through the new platform and a redesigned component layout, allowing for more efficient use of available space while providing a comfortable interior. The company aims to offer a spacious and functional environment for passengers, enhancing both comfort and practicality. One of the most notable technological advancements will be the introduction of a new generation of LFP batteries, with capacities ranging between 60 and 70 kWh. LFP technology has gained popularity in recent years due to its lower production costs, absence of cobalt usage, and longer lifespan. These batteries are expected to provide a driving range of up to 500 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle, offering substantial autonomy for daily use and long-distance travel. Another groundbreaking innovation will be the implementation of a steer-by-wire system, eliminating the mechanical link between the steering wheel and the wheels. Instead, electronic systems will fully control the steering function. This shift marks a significant step towards autonomous driving capabilities and enhances safety and responsiveness. Complementing this system, Peugeot is likely to introduce a futuristic steering console known as Hypersquare, first showcased on the concept model Inception. This steering unit resembles a console more than a traditional round steering wheel, potentially becoming a signature feature of future electric models from the French manufacturer. There is also speculation that a sporty GTI variant could be included in the lineup. While technical specifications have not been officially released, industry experts suggest that such a version might be introduced alongside the standard model. If development proceeds as planned, the new Peugeot 2008 could make its debut at the Munich Motor Show in 2027, with sales beginning in early 2028. Production will continue at Stellantis' factory in Vigo, Spain, ensuring consistency in quality and manufacturing standards.
