A dog in the house could improve respiratory health in children

According to the study’s authors, bacterial and fungal genera associated with dogs might explain up to a quarter of the link between dog ownership and fewer respiratory infections in the first year of life. However, since this was an observational study analyzing existing conditions using statistical methods, it does not prove that these microbes have a direct causal effect. Nonetheless, the results offer promising grounds for further research. It is known that family members share beneficial microorganisms. Given that humans and dogs have coexisted for a long time, it is entirely possible that through evolution, we have started sharing some “good” bacteria as well. Healthy dogs carry a diverse range of microorganisms. “Early childhood respiratory infections are a significant risk factor for asthma,” said lead researcher Anne Karvonen. “If it is possible to prevent some of these infections with microorganisms associated with dogs, it could reduce the risk of a child developing asthma later in life.” However, the picture is more complex than initially thought. Another observational study published in May in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology showed that the relationship is somewhat more complicated. Researchers analyzed data from 99,389 Swedish-born children diagnosed with asthma and allergic rhinitis between ages three and 16. Their data were statistically compared to information about whether they had a dog at home. “The presence of a dog in the home did not increase the risk of moderate to severe asthma in children already diagnosed with asthma and allergies, although it was associated with a slightly higher risk of disease exacerbation,” the study authors wrote. Despite this, asthma levels in the general population did not significantly change if children were later no longer exposed to dogs. This could imply that dogs are not a key factor in the development of asthma. Further studies will be needed to provide a complete answer. Dogs may also influence the immune system. A study published in 2025 in the journal Brain, Behavior and Immunity suggested that growing up with indoor pets might protect against chronic low-grade inflammation in urban populations. The reason could be greater exposure to so-called “old friends”, microorganisms with which humans have coexisted and evolved over millennia. “Exposure to ‘old friends,’ which is predicted to be higher in homes with indoor pets, influences our immune system and promotes the formation of a larger number of regulatory T cells,” explained physiologist Christopher Lowry from the University of Colorado Boulder. “Without sufficient exposure to ‘old friends,’ the immune system may become overly sensitive and react to harmless substances as threats.”
