PENGASSAN stabilised after leadership succession reforms — Osifo

PENGASSAN, Nigeria's influential Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association, has achieved a notable degree of stability following comprehensive reforms aimed at streamlining its leadership succession process. According to Festus Osifo, the current president of PENGASSAN, these reforms have effectively resolved long-standing tensions that previously marred transitions in leadership. Osifo made these remarks during a memorial event in Abuja commemorating the seventh anniversary of the late former president, Francis Olabode Johnson, who passed away on May 31, 2019, after a brief illness. Johnson's sudden death initially caused uncertainty within the union, but according to Osifo, the organization quickly regrouped and continued its mission. Reflecting on the legacy of Johnson, Osifo emphasized the importance of drawing inspiration from past leaders' qualities to honor their contributions. He highlighted that PENGASSAN, established in 1978, continues to be a leading trade union in Nigeria, uniting skilled professionals from the oil and gas sector. Over the years, the union faced challenges due to differing opinions among its members, particularly during leadership transitions. To address these issues, PENGASSAN implemented constitutional reforms aimed at ensuring a smoother succession process. A key component of these reforms was the adoption of a new succession model, similar to that used by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN). Under this model, the office of the president is no longer contested directly. Instead, members compete for the position of Deputy President, who automatically assumes the presidency upon the incumbent's term ending. This change was introduced through a constitutional amendment that was unanimously approved in August of last year. Osifo explained that the decision was based on a thorough evaluation of various succession models employed by other organizations, including the Nigerian Bar Association and ICAN. The chosen model aims to reduce the competition for the presidential role and promote a more harmonious transfer of power. The effectiveness of this new system has already begun to show, with Osifo noting that the upcoming transition in August is proceeding without any major issues. Unlike previous transitions, which were often marked by instability and conflict, the current situation reflects complete stability within the union. Both the Central Working Committee and the National Executive Council remain intact, and the transition process is moving forward smoothly. Osifo expressed hope that future leadership will continue to build on the foundation laid by his administration, emphasizing the importance of maintaining transparency and fostering a spirit of camaraderie within the union. He believes that when members recognize the efforts of their leaders, they are more likely to offer their support and cooperation. At the memorial event, former General Secretary of PENGASSAN, Comrade Lumumba Okugbawa, encouraged Nigerians to embrace selfless leadership, integrity, and sacrifice. He stressed that true leadership is defined by service, character, and the positive impact leaders have on society. Okugbawa underscored that great leaders are remembered not by the positions they held but by the values they upheld and the lives they influenced positively. As PENGASSAN prepares for its delegates conference on August 22, 2026, the focus remains on ensuring that the union stays committed to its core responsibilities rather than being sidetracked by internal conflicts over leadership. The implementation of the new succession model is expected to play a crucial role in achieving this goal, allowing the union to concentrate on its primary objectives while minimizing disruptions associated with leadership changes.
