PCP says PS gave a hand to a "defeated and isolated" government to save PSU

Paulo Raimundo, leader of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), stated during a press conference that the Socialist Party (PS) has handed over power to a 'defeated and isolated' government in order to save the Unique Social Allowance (PSU). He criticized this move, arguing that it does not address any issues related to the PSU. Raimundo emphasized that the PCP's concern is not who the government aligns with but rather the consequences of the policies being implemented. He described the Liberal Initiative (Chega) as the main ideological force, with Chega acting as the 'can opener' for political agendas and the government implementing them. Regarding labor reforms, Raimundo praised the rejection of proposed changes by workers and the General Confederation of Workers (CGTP), calling it a significant victory for both workers and the CGTP. He warned that if attempts are made again to push through labor reforms, workers would once again show their strength, unity, and resistance.

The Portuguese Socialist Party (PS) has accused the current government led by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro of engaging in ideological maneuvers with the far-right party Chega to divert public attention from pressing issues such as the rising cost of living. This criticism came during the second day of the PS's parliamentary days, which began on Sunday and are being held in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area until Wednesday. The PS leaders emphasized that the government is moving against the interests of the population, focusing instead on ideological debates rather than addressing concrete problems affecting citizens' daily lives.

During a train journey between Sintra’s Portela station and Lisbon’s Rossio station, José Luís Carneiro, leader of the PS, stated that the government is going against the grain, likening its approach to driving in the wrong direction on a highway at high speed. He argued that this strategy will lead to negative outcomes, particularly in areas such as food prices, housing, healthcare, transportation, and fuel costs. Carneiro highlighted the difficulties faced by many Portuguese families in meeting their monthly expenses and stressed the need for immediate solutions to these challenges.

The PS proposed several measures aimed at alleviating the burden on households, including reducing the value-added tax (IVA) on essential food items to zero, lowering the IVA on fuels, reducing taxes on electricity and gas, and providing support to farmers and fishermen to offset increased production costs. These proposals have been repeatedly rejected by the governing coalition, which includes the PSD, CDS-PP, Chega, and the Independent Liberal (IL) parties. Carneiro criticized these rejections as ideological distractions, arguing that they prevent meaningful discussions on the issues most relevant to ordinary citizens.

In addition to criticizing the government's focus on ideological battles, Carneiro also pointed out what he described as diversionary tactics, such as the announcement of a sovereign wealth fund. He claimed that such announcements serve to shift media attention away from more pressing concerns, thereby undermining efforts to address the country's economic and social challenges. The PS leader reiterated his call for the government to change course and prioritize practical solutions over political maneuvering.

Eurico Brilhante Dias, another prominent figure within the PS, echoed similar sentiments during the opening of the parliamentary days in Sintra. He announced new initiatives aimed at supporting families in areas such as food, fuel, and housing, emphasizing the need for concrete action to alleviate the financial strain on households. Despite the PS's repeated proposals, these have consistently been blocked by the ruling coalition, leading to frustration among socialist lawmakers who feel their efforts are being ignored.

Meanwhile, the Communist Party of Portugal (PCP) has taken a critical stance towards the PS, accusing it of giving the government a hand to save the Universal Social Support (PSU). According to Paulo Raimundo, secretary-general of the PCP, the PS's decision to support the government in preserving the PSU does not solve any underlying issues related to the program. He emphasized that the focus should not be on whom the government aligns with but rather on the consequences of the policies implemented. Raimundo also dismissed claims that the government is being pushed into the agenda set by Chega, stating that the Ideological Initiative (IL) provides the ideological direction while Chega acts as a catalyst for policy changes.

Regarding the labor reforms, Raimundo praised the PS for its role in blocking the proposed changes to labor laws, calling it a significant victory for workers and trade unions. He credited the PCP for its unwavering stance throughout the process and warned the government that any attempt to push forward with previously rejected reforms would face strong resistance from organized labor.

Carneiro further criticized the relationship between the government and Chega, using the phrase "beijos e amuos," which translates to "kisses and quarrels." He suggested that the government's interactions with Chega reflect a pattern of political posturing rather than genuine collaboration. Carneiro reaffirmed the PS's position as the sole viable alternative to the current administration, highlighting the need for a clear and decisive political direction that prioritizes the well-being of the populace over ideological disputes.

PS accuses government of "ideological maneuvers" with Chega to divert attention

The Portuguese Socialist Party (PS) leader, José Luís Carneiro, criticized the current government led by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro during a parliamentary event focused on rising living costs. He accused the government of engaging in 'ideological maneuvers' with the far-right Chega party to divert attention away from pressing issues such as housing, healthcare, transportation, and fuel prices. PCP says PS gave a hand to a "defeated and isolated" government to save PSU

The Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) claims that the Socialist Party (PS) has handed over power to a 'defeated and isolated' government in order to save the Public Service Union (PSU). Paulo Raimundo, a representative of the PCP, states that the rejection of changes to labor law was entirely due to workers and the General Confederation of Workers of Portugal (CGTP).
