Panic in Benue community as residents raise alarm over armed herders’ sighting

Residents of Borikyo community in Ukum Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State have raised the alarm over the reported movement of suspected armed herders in parts of the area, calling on security agencies to urgently intervene to prevent a possible attack. The situation has sparked panic among locals, with reports indicating that armed individuals have been spotted traversing several locations within the community, including Tse Iortseghen, Haachigh, Tse Tor, the residence of late Afuluka Dyodon, and Tse Nyamkume. These sightings have led to increased anxiety among farmers and other community members, prompting calls for swift action from local authorities. According to a youth leader in the area, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, the suspected armed men were observed moving through farmlands, carrying firearms and cutlasses. This has forced some farmers to halt their agricultural activities due to fears of potential violence. The individual revealed that approximately eight armed individuals were seen together at Tse Nyamkume, near Tse Adigi in Borikyo, with each person reportedly equipped with a firearm. The presence of such a group has intensified tensions in the community, with many fearing that this could signal an imminent threat. Community members have expressed deep concern over the escalating situation, emphasizing the need for urgent intervention from security forces. One resident stated that the movement of these armed individuals represents a clear warning sign, urging government officials to take preventive measures before a crisis erupts. “We have seen these armed men moving around our farmlands. They are carrying guns and cutlasses, and the entire community is living in fear. We appeal to security agencies to act before anything terrible happens,” the resident said. Other community members have echoed similar sentiments, urging the military, police, and other security agencies to investigate the reports, enhance surveillance efforts, and increase patrols in the affected regions. They believe that timely intervention could help safeguard both human lives and property. “We don’t want to wait until people are killed before security personnel respond. We are pleading for immediate action to protect our communities and our means of livelihood,” another resident added. In response to the growing concerns, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Benue State Command, DSP Peter Aondongu, confirmed that no official report had been received regarding the incident. However, the lack of communication from law enforcement has only fueled further uncertainty among the residents. Many are now advising one another to stay alert, avoid traveling alone in remote areas, and promptly report any suspicious activity to the relevant authorities.
