Palestinians bury four people killed in occupied West Bank clash with Israeli settlers

Two men were killed by the Israeli army in the West Bank, according to the Israeli Ministry of Defense. The incident occurred in the village of Tell, located in the Nablus area of the occupied West Bank, and resulted in the deaths of four Palestinians and one Israeli settler. The conflict erupted when approximately 20 Israeli settlers entered the village and engaged in a confrontation with local residents. The violence escalated rapidly. A Palestinian villager reportedly seized an Israeli settler’s weapon and shot dead one of the settlers. In response, an emergency response team from a nearby settlement rushed to the scene, leading to further exchanges of fire that left four Palestinians and a second Israeli dead, according to the Israeli military. The Israeli military confirmed that its forces had closed gates and checkpoints throughout the West Bank, significantly restricting movement and imposing strict controls on access to the village. Local officials described the aftermath of the clashes as chaotic and deeply distressing. Walid Zidan, head of the Tell village council, stated that families of the four victims held a joint funeral early on Saturday, though attendance was heavily restricted due to military presence. Only about 30 people were allowed to attend, according to Zidan. He recounted how Israeli forces continued to patrol the village, detaining 51 residents for questioning and releasing only six of them. Those detained were marked with numbers on their foreheads, a practice that drew criticism from local residents. Saif Hamza, one of those released after being questioned, expressed confusion and frustration over the circumstances surrounding the incident. “I am in my own home, and someone comes and assaults me,” Zidan said, questioning the legality and morality of the settlers’ actions. “Under what law? Under what moral or legal authority? I am in my own home, on my own land. By what right you, as settlers, come here?” The violence in the West Bank has intensified since the outbreak of the Gaza war, which began with Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel. This particular incident has already sparked political consequences, prompting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to announce plans to expand settlements in the region. Netanyahu stated that Israel would increase raids on Palestinian villages suspected of harboring militants and accelerate efforts to legalize existing farm outposts and establish new ones. Settlements in the occupied West Bank are considered illegal under international law, and outposts, small settlements often built without official government approval, are particularly controversial. Ghassan Daghlas, the governor of the Nablus region, attended a funeral service at the Nablus hospital where the bodies of the deceased were placed before the burial. He was joined by large crowds of mourners from Tell and other areas within the Nablus governorate. At the hospital, AFP journalists observed the bodies of the four Palestinians lying on stretchers, covered in Palestinian flags, as friends and family bid farewell. Ahmed Ramadan, whose son was among the deceased, described the emotional impact of discovering his son’s death upon arriving at the hospital. Ismail al-Saifi, another resident of Tell, emphasized that the settlers’ presence in the village was not an isolated occurrence, and that the community had chosen to resist in self-defense. The Israeli occupation of the West Bank dates back to 1967, and in recent years, the number of settlements has grown substantially. Excluding East Jerusalem, more than 500,000 Israelis reside in settlements across the West Bank, which is home to approximately three million Palestinians. According to Israeli statistics, at least 48 Israelis, including both civilians and security personnel, have been killed in attacks carried out by Palestinians or during operations conducted by Israeli forces.
