Palestinian terrorist indicted over 2007 West Bank murder of Israeli civilian

A Palestinian militant has been formally charged with the 2007 murder of an Israeli civilian during a targeted shooting attack in the West Bank, according to Israeli military authorities. Shadi Jumaa, identified as one of three assailants, faces charges of intentional homicide following the killing of Ido Zoldan, a 29-year-old resident of the settlement of Shavei Shomron. The indictment was filed by military prosecutors on Thursday, marking the culmination of a long legal process spanning nearly two decades. Jumaa was apprehended by Israeli security forces in the city of Qalqilya on May 26, 2026, after having been released from custody by the Palestinian Authority. He had previously been detained by Palestinian authorities approximately two weeks following the attack. According to footage shared by Israeli police, Jumaa was surrounded by members of the elite Gideonim unit (Unit 33) and ordered to exit his vehicle before surrendering. His arrest followed years of legal proceedings and multiple attempts to locate him. The indictment alleges that Jumaa and two co-offenders planned a coordinated attack targeting Israeli settlers traveling along a highway near the West Bank village of al-Funduq. On November 19, 2007, the trio obtained weapons and a vehicle and began searching for vehicles driven by Jewish Israelis. They eventually located Zoldan’s car and approached it. One of the accomplices opened fire at close range, intending to kill Zoldan. The attack resulted in the victim’s death, and all three assailants fled the area. The other two individuals involved in the attack, Dhafer Barham and Abdallah Barham, were captured by Israeli forces shortly after the incident occurred. Both were initially imprisoned and later received life sentences. However, they were released in October 2025 as part of a broader agreement involving the exchange of hostages with the Hamas organization. Jumaa’s case represents a rare instance of a suspect being brought to justice more than 18 years after the crime. While the other two perpetrators have already faced judicial consequences, Jumaa’s prosecution highlights ongoing efforts by Israeli authorities to pursue accountability for past acts of violence.
