Palace: Mabanta’s apology a ‘lesson’ on creating baseless intrigue

The Philippine government has responded to the public apology issued by Franco Mabanta, the founder of Peanut Gallery Media Network (PGMN), stating that his admission of wrongdoing offers a "lesson" regarding the dangers of spreading unverified information and inciting unnecessary controversy. This response came after Mabanta publicly apologized to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, Vice President Sara Duterte, and Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo for past criticisms and allegations made against them. The apology followed Mabanta's recent arrest in connection with an alleged attempt to extort P350 million from former House Speaker Martin Romualdez.

According to reports, Mabanta released a video addressing these individuals, expressing regret for his earlier statements and claims. He also suggested that Romualdez had orchestrated tensions between Marcos and Duterte. However, the palace emphasized that such accusations without substantial proof can lead to misinformation and harm innocent citizens. Earlier in May, Castro had attempted to distance Marcos from Mabanta, who was arrested in April over the extortion charge.

Mabanta's arrest occurred amid an entrapment operation conducted by the National Bureau of Investigation in Pasig City. Although he was released shortly thereafter after posting bail, his online presence revealed that he had previously worked for the Marcos family. As far back as January 2018, Mabanta held the position of social media director for the Marcos family, managing the president's weekly vlog content. This history raises questions about the nature of his relationship with the administration and whether his actions were motivated by personal grievances or political maneuvering.
