Over 2.31 lakh complaints on crimes against women, children received on help desks in Punjab

In Punjab, over 2.31 lakh complaints related to crimes against women and children were received through newly established Women Help Desks located at police stations. These desks, introduced to make police services more accessible and women-friendly, have seen significant usage since their launch. As of June 30, 2026, the Punjab Grievance Disposal (PGD) portal recorded 1,33,152 complaints, with 74.8% handled by female police personnel known as Mahila Mittars. The state government has allocated 93 electric scooters for women police officers to enhance their outreach and response time. The initiative, launched in 2021, aims to create a victim-centric environment and includes 10 women police stations and 15 women cells offering support services. The effectiveness of the help desks is being evaluated with the involvement of NGOs J-PAL and Hartek Foundation.
