A dark fantasy novel inspired by the *Harry Potter* series has recently arrived in Croatia, marking a significant moment in both literary circles and online communities. The book, titled *Alchemised*, was originally conceived as a fanfiction piece but has now transitioned into mainstream publishing under the prestigious imprint Penguin Classics. It has already gained immense popularity on platforms such as TikTok, where it became a sensation within the BookTok community—a subsection dedicated to books. The novel's author, SenLinYu, is known primarily within fanfiction circles, but her work has now crossed over into traditional publishing, gaining recognition beyond its initial niche audience.
The story is set in a world of necromancy, alchemy, war trauma, and morally ambiguous decisions. At its center is Helena Marino, a wartime captive living on the decaying estate of Kaine Ferron, a former classmate turned antagonist. His mission is to search her mind for lost memories, leading to a complex, obsessive, and emotionally taxing relationship between the two characters, marked by war, power, guilt, and survival. Unlike many romantic narratives, *Alchemised* does not aim to present an idealized love story. Instead, it explores how love, identity, and morality are affected after extreme violence and loss.
The novel is divided into three parts and avoids being a conventional romance, even though many readers interpret it as one. SenLinYu has emphasized in interviews that *Alchemised* was never intended to be a romantic novel in the genre sense, but rather a story about love that does not idealize its protagonists. This aspect might contribute to its appeal, offering readers a more nuanced and challenging narrative than typical escapist fantasy.
It is important to note that *Alchemised* is not a light read. It comes with numerous content warnings, including themes of medical torture, human experimentation, eugenics, and other extremely difficult topics. Despite this, the book’s viral success is intriguing—readers have responded not to easy escapism, but to a heavy, emotionally intense novel that delves deeply into complex issues.
The journey to *Alchemised* began long before its major publishing deal. SenLinYu had been part of the fanfiction community for years, and prior to *Alchemised*, there was *Manacled*, a fanfiction published on Archive of Our Own (AO3). This particular text quickly became highly popular within the Dramione fandom—the community centered around the relationship between Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy from the *Harry Potter* universe. With millions of downloads, translations into multiple languages, and a strong presence on TikTok, *Manacled* transcended the boundaries of fanfiction and became a true BookTok phenomenon.
*Manacled* presents an alternative, significantly darker version of the *Harry Potter* world, where the war ended differently, Voldemort won, and familiar characters ended up in a brutal dystopian order. Part of its inspiration came from Margaret Atwood’s *The Handmaid’s Tale*, particularly in themes of body control, power, captivity, and trauma. As a result, *Manacled* was not just a romantic fanfiction featuring well-known characters, but also a dark tale about war, coercion, memory, and survival.
When SenLinYu began adapting *Manacled* into *Alchemised*, the process was far more demanding than simply changing names and removing references to *Harry Potter*. She needed to build an entirely new world, a new magical system, a new mythology, and a different alchemical framework, while preserving the emotional core that made the original fanfiction so beloved. Therefore, *Alchemised* is not merely a cleaned-up version of the fanfiction—it is a new construction born from the old narrative and emotional essence. It no longer belongs to the *Harry Potter* universe and does not rely on its references, making it a standalone work with its own unique setting and themes.
