On a dark and stormy night, hundreds of people gathered at the base of Mount Rtanj, determined to ascend its steep, rocky path in honor of Vidovdan—June 24th, a day of great historical significance in Serbian culture. This year, more than 1,100 individuals embarked on the challenging seven-kilometer climb, driven by both tradition and personal devotion. The journey was marked by the flickering glow of headlamps cutting through the darkness as climbers made their way up the rugged terrain. Many carried crosses, some lay down briefly to rest, and all waited patiently for a moment they had long anticipated—the sunrise over the mountain.

The ascent took place under conditions that were far from ideal. The sky was clear but the wind howled relentlessly, creating an almost otherworldly atmosphere. Climbers wrapped themselves in layers of clothing, huddled together for warmth, and relied on each other’s support to navigate the difficult trail. As the group reached higher elevations, the landscape transformed into something surreal, where the towering silhouette of Mount Šiljak seemed to defy the elements above them. It was a setting that many described as feeling like another world entirely.

As dawn approached, anticipation grew among the climbers. They watched the horizon anxiously, waiting for the first light of the sun to break through the darkness. However, the experience did not unfold exactly as expected. Instead of rising directly from the edge of the horizon, the sun appeared behind a strange mass of dark clouds that obscured the usual view. At first, it emerged hesitantly, appearing rosy and timid, as though uncertain about making its presence known. For a moment, it seemed to waver before disappearing again behind a large gray cloud.

Despite this unexpected twist, the sun eventually broke free, illuminating the sky with increasing intensity. It rose slowly, confidently, and finally burst forth in full force, casting golden rays across the landscape and marking the beginning of yet another powerful day. The sight left many breathless, with several describing the moment as indescribable, beyond the reach of language. Some even claimed it felt as though the sun itself had risen from the earth.

Participants came from all corners of Serbia, with a notable number also traveling from neighboring countries such as Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly the Republic of Srpska. For many, the climb represented more than just a physical challenge—it was a deeply spiritual and emotional experience. "It's worth coming, trying, and even if you're an amateur, the mountain is amazing," said Kristina Jeftić, who participated in the event for the first time. Others echoed her sentiment, emphasizing the unique energy and sense of connection they felt while standing atop the summit.

This annual event, known as the Vidovdan Ascent of Mt. Rtanj, has become a cherished tradition organized by the "Šiljak" Youth Association from Boljevac, supported by the Serbian Alpine Club. The association has been instrumental in promoting the event, ensuring safety measures are in place, and encouraging participation from both seasoned climbers and newcomers alike. In addition to the Vidovdan ascent, there is also a Christmas Ascent held on the first Saturday after the holiday season, further cementing the cultural significance of these climbs.

For some participants, climbing Rtanj has become a recurring ritual. Suzana Jovanović, who attended the event for the third time, noted that she had also completed a Christmas ascent. She mentioned that many others have climbed the mountain more than ten times, drawn back by its allure and the unforgettable experiences it offers. Tatjana Popović, who described the southern route as particularly challenging due to its serpentine paths and rocky sections, emphasized the thrill of the adventure. "It's fantastic, fascinating, and I would recommend it to anyone who can endure it," she said, highlighting the sense of excitement and discovery that comes with conquering the mountain.

As the sun continued its ascent, casting a warm glow over the gathered crowd, the climbers stood in awe, reflecting on the journey they had undertaken. Whether they were veterans of the route or first-time participants, all shared a common sentiment—that the experience of watching the sunrise from the peak of Rtanj was something truly special, a moment that would remain etched in their memories for years to come.
