The purchase of school supplies has become a pressing issue once again, with many questioning how much it actually costs to equip a child for the start of the academic year and which items represent the largest expenses. According to an analysis based on data from the smart shopping platform Shoptok.si, the cost of equipping a student varies significantly depending on the price category chosen by buyers, ranging from 64 euros to 313 euros per student. The most expensive individual item in this context is the school backpack. The analysis included products from various categories of school supplies, such as backpacks, pencil cases, sets of ten notebooks, crayons and temperas, pencils, markers and highlighters, rulers, other geometric tools, and calculators. Complete sets of school supplies were divided into three price categories, with the cheapest costing 64 euros, the mid-range set priced at 158 euros, and the premium version reaching 313 euros. This premium category includes more expensive items from each category and is nearly five times the cost of the cheapest option. In all three categories, the backpack is the most expensive individual item, with average costs ranging from 20 to 90 euros, depending on the price range selected. In the cheapest category, the backpack represents the largest share of the budget. Overall, differences within individual categories can be substantial. For example, the most expensive backpack in the sample costs 132 euros, which is almost 17 times the price of the cheapest one, which costs just 8 euros. Similar discrepancies apply to notebooks. In other words, prices for items serving the same purpose can vary considerably, highlighting the importance of comparing different products when making purchases. Search trends indicate that users begin looking for backpacks several weeks in advance, while smaller accessories such as pencil cases and highlighters see increased interest mainly in the last two weeks before the start of school. Notebooks have recorded the highest increase in interest over the past four weeks, rising by 38 percent, faster than any other item analyzed during this period. Following the backpack, the second-highest average price is for rulers at 19.09 euros, followed by pencil cases at 16.17 euros and calculators at 13.88 euros. Generally, except for the backpack, which represents a somewhat larger investment on its own, school supplies mostly involve a collection of smaller expenses. Together, they can constitute a significant expense, especially when considering the additional cost of books and study materials. Of course, most students do not enter the new school year with completely new equipment, but first-graders typically require more supplies. According to estimates, approximately 20,000 first-grade students will soon begin their education in Slovenia, and preparations for their first day of school are already underway in full force. Parents are advised to carefully consider their choices when purchasing school supplies, given the wide range of prices and the potential impact on their budgets. The analysis underscores the need for careful planning and comparison shopping to ensure that families make informed decisions about their spending. With the new school year approaching, the demand for school supplies continues to rise, prompting both retailers and consumers to pay close attention to pricing trends and availability.
