Two Isola towns advised against bathing because of pollution

On August 11, 2026, authorities in Velenje issued a warning to swimmers in Lake Velenjsko regarding potential toxic cyanobacteria. The Water Directorate detected green algae with possible toxin-producing cyanobacteria in certain areas of the lake. Local officials advised visitors to avoid visible green scum and refrain from drinking water in these zones. While the risk of acute poisoning during regular recreation is considered low, special caution was recommended for children and pets. The warning came after routine checks conducted by the National Laboratory for Health, Environment, and Food revealed that microbiological and physical-chemical parameters of the water remained within acceptable limits. These tests included the presence of bacteria such as Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci, along with measurements of temperature, pH, oxygen saturation, and turbidity. However, the monitoring did not include testing for the presence of cyanobacteria or their toxins. As a result, normal water quality results do not guarantee the absence of harmful microorganisms. Cyanobacteria can rapidly multiply under favorable conditions, such as high temperatures, intense sunlight, and other suitable environmental factors, to form visible green scums or blooms. Some species produce toxins that can cause skin and mucous membrane irritation, and ingestion or inhalation of contaminated water or aerosols could lead to further health issues. The National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ) advised swimmers to avoid areas with visible algal accumulations in the water, on the shore, or in the sediment. They also cautioned against sitting on dried algae along the shoreline or remaining in areas where wind carries dry algal material. For water sports such as swimming and kayaking, the institute recommended minimizing direct contact with algal blooms and using appropriate protective clothing. After exposure to potentially contaminated water, individuals were advised to thoroughly rinse off and clean and dry their clothing and equipment. In case of health concerns following exposure, swimmers should seek medical assistance immediately. The NIJZ also encouraged swimming primarily at natural beaches and recreational areas where water quality is regularly monitored under state guidelines. Local authorities reiterated that they continue to monitor water quality at the Velenjska Beach area. Despite the current findings, they emphasized that the monitoring process does not currently assess for cyanobacterial presence or toxin levels. Therefore, while the water appears safe based on standard indicators, there remains a possibility of harmful microorganism presence. Officials have stated they will keep the public informed of any new recommendations or changes in the situation. The advisory has been widely circulated through local media and official channels, urging visitors to exercise caution and follow the guidance provided. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges associated with algal blooms in freshwater bodies, particularly during warmer months. With rising temperatures and increased solar radiation, the likelihood of cyanobacterial proliferation continues to grow, prompting heightened vigilance among local health and environmental agencies.

Bathing on popular Slovenian beaches is not recommended, but what exactly is E. coli?

Na dveh izolskih kopalnih mestih, Svetilnik in Delfin, je Nacionalni inštitut za javno zdravje (NIJZ) odsvetoval kopanje zaradi visokega prisotnosti bakterije Escherichia coli (E. coli) v vodi. Meritev so pokazale 4300 enot, kar predstavlja devetkratno preseganje mejne vrednosti (500 enot).

These two beaches in Isola are not recommended for swimming.

Be advised, there are two places in Isola where swimming is prohibited.

Why factuality (75): The article reports on the closure of two beaches in Izola due to high levels of E. coli in the water, citing preliminary results from the National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ).
