More reports of sexual violence again: 'It's a more debatable issue'

The number of people seeking help from the Dutch Center for Sexual Violence (CSG) has increased by 21% compared to the previous year, reaching 4,640 victims in 2025. This marks a continued rise since the center’s establishment in 2012. According to Iva Bicanic, director of knowledge development at CSG, these reports represent only the tip of the iceberg, as many individuals still struggle to come forward. The center received around 23,000 reports from victims, relatives, and professionals. Bicanic attributes this increase to growing societal awareness and openness about sexual violence, supported by more media coverage, documentaries, and public discussions. Additionally, changes in legislation, such as the new sexual offenses law enacted in July 2024, have made it easier for victims to report incidents without needing proof of coercion. The death of 17-year-old Lisa from Abcoude last year also led to an uptick in reports related to sexual violence.
