Kosovo Ombudsman launches investigation into allegations of police harassment at Gazimestan

The Ombudsman of Kosovo has initiated an investigation into allegations of mistreatment by police officers against individuals detained during the celebration of Vidovdan on June 28 at Gazimestan. The institution stated that the inquiry aims to verify claims and complaints received from multiple citizens who were arrested by the Kosovo Police and allege they were subjected to physical and psychological abuse during their transport to the police station, as well as violations of rights guaranteed by the Constitution and existing laws. According to the Ombudsman's statement, the investigation will assess whether the treatment of detainees complied with constitutional, legal, and international standards for protecting fundamental human rights and freedoms. It emphasized that all individuals deprived of liberty must be treated with dignity and in accordance with the absolute prohibition of physical abuse, inhumane or degrading treatment, or punishment. Additionally, any claim of excessive use of force or violation of the rights of those deprived of liberty requires an independent, impartial, effective, and prompt investigation.
