The campaign humorously suggests that data centers could be cooled using pee, highlighting the vast amounts of water consumed by AI operations. While the idea is clearly meant as a joke, it has drawn attention to the real-world use of recycled water in data center cooling systems. Kelce's video features a group of people walking through a field while sipping Liquid Death beer and chanting, “Let’s pee on computers together to save humanity!” This lighthearted approach contrasts sharply with the serious issue of water consumption in data centers. According to industry experts, AI data centers indeed consume enormous volumes of water to keep servers from overheating, raising concerns about sustainability and resource management. Michael Obradovitch, vice president of Data Center Global Accounts at Ecolab, acknowledged the humorous angle of the campaign but emphasized that there are existing solutions for reducing reliance on potable water. Alternative water sources, such as recycled water, are already being utilized extensively in data centers. Recycled water is produced by treating wastewater and sewage to make it suitable for non-potable uses, including industrial cooling applications. Bruno Pigott, executive director of the WateReuse Association and former acting assistant administrator in water for the EPA, explained that while direct use of urine is impractical due to its composition, containing salts, urea, bacteria, and organic matter, it can be treated and repurposed. However, the process requires advanced filtration and purification techniques to ensure it does not cause damage to equipment or create maintenance issues. The concept of using urine directly for cooling is fraught with challenges. Pigott pointed out that introducing untreated urine into cooling towers would lead to frequent cleaning and potential clogging due to mineral deposits. Evaporative cooling, a common method used in data centers, involves passing hot air through water to dissipate heat. Applying this principle with urine would likely result in inefficiencies and operational complications. Despite these challenges, the technology exists to convert urine into potable water, as demonstrated by astronauts who recycle their urine aboard spacecraft. However, scaling this process to meet the demands of data centers is currently impractical. Most of the water flushed down toilets ends up in wastewater treatment plants, where it undergoes extensive processing before being reused for industrial purposes. Dr. Greta Zornes, practice leader for water reuse at CDM Smith, noted that the use of recycled water for cooling has been a growing trend over the past few decades. With the increasing demand for data centers, her focus has shifted significantly towards developing and implementing water reuse technologies tailored for this sector. Zornes highlighted that transitioning to recycled water reduces the strain on local potable water supplies. However, such transitions depend heavily on the availability of robust infrastructure capable of handling large volumes of water daily. Without adequate treatment facilities, the widespread adoption of recycled water remains limited. As the global push for sustainable practices intensifies, the conversation around innovative water usage in data centers continues to evolve. While the idea of using urine might seem far-fetched, it underscores the need for creative solutions to address the environmental impact of technological advancements.
