A NATO member country has ordered thousands of artillery shells produced by the German defense company Rheinmetall, which will eventually be delivered to Ukraine. The contract involves several thousand 155-mm artillery shells valued at tens of millions of euros. While Rheinmetall did not specify which country placed the order or how many shells Ukraine will receive, the shells are described as a proven combination already widely used on the front lines in Ukraine. These are ER02A1 B/B 155-mm high-explosive shells available in two configurations, with ranges up to approximately 30 km and 40 km respectively. Rheinmetall produces these shells at its Expal Munitions factory in Spain, acquired in 2023 to expand production outside Germany. Ukraine has already been using these shells with various Western-made howitzers. However, despite requesting 1.2 million long-range 155-mm shells in 2026, Rheinmetall can only deliver around 100,000 due to production constraints.
