In the early hours of Friday morning, a devastating fire broke out at an ancient wooden church located in the village of Posta, within the commune of Remetea Chioarului in Maramureș county. The structure, which dates back over 350 years, was engulfed in flames, with the towering bell tower—approximately 25 meters high—being particularly affected. There is now an imminent risk that this historic tower could collapse due to the damage caused by the fire.

The incident occurred around 4:00 AM when emergency services were alerted to the blaze. A significant number of firefighting resources were deployed to the scene, including three water and foam tankers, one aerial ladder truck for high-rise intervention and rescue operations, two SMURD first aid units, a water tanker for supply, as well as two primary response vehicles and command units. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered intense burning across an area of roughly 200 square meters. The fire had already consumed the entire church building and its bell tower, forcing the firefighters into a dangerous situation where they constantly faced the threat of structural collapse.

Firefighters managed to contain the fire and continued their efforts to extinguish remaining hotspots and mitigate the effects of the blaze. As of now, authorities have not disclosed the likely cause of the fire nor the extent of the damages incurred.

The wooden church in Posta, situated in the commune of Remetea Chioarului, was constructed in 1675 and is listed as a historical monument. Known by the name "Sfântul Ilie" (Saint Elijah), the church serves as a valuable example of traditional Maramureș architecture.
