The National Population Commission (NPC) in Nigeria has revealed that despite approximately five million births occurring annually, a significant portion of these births and deaths remain unregistered. Current birth registration coverage is around 57%, while death registration is less than 20% nationally. This lack of registration denies many Nigerians a legal identity and hinders the government from obtaining accurate demographic data essential for national planning and policy-making. To address this issue, the NPC has launched a new digital platform called VitalReg, aimed at improving the efficiency and accuracy of birth and death registrations. The platform, which became fully operational in July 2026, allows for continuous online access to registration services, reduces administrative burdens, enhances data security, and integrates with other national digital identity systems. The initiative is supported by a public-private partnership with Barnksforte Technology Limited.
