NFA hikes palay buying price to P21

The National Food Authority (NFA) in the Philippines has increased its purchasing price for palay (unmilled rice) to P21 per kilogram from P17 per kilogram effective September, aiming to support farmers amid rising costs of fertilizers and other inputs. This decision was announced by Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., who also imposed a temporary import ban on rice in Iloilo from mid-September to late November to protect local producers during peak harvest. The move is intended to raise farm-gate prices and improve farmer income. Additionally, the NFA plans to build new rice processing facilities in Iloilo and across the country to reduce post-harvest losses, enhance food security, and increase farmer earnings. These initiatives align with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s goal of modernizing agriculture.
