Newly unearthed mechanism that helps plants 'feel full' could help crops use fertilizer more efficiently

Researchers from New York University have discovered a molecular mechanism in plants that allows them to sense when they have absorbed sufficient nitrogen, potentially leading to more efficient fertilizer use. The study, published in The Plant Cell, identifies a protein called HHO5 that acts as a regulator of nitrogen satiety, influencing gene expression and plant growth based on nitrogen intake. This discovery could enable the development of crops that absorb more nitrogen from the soil, reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers. Excess nitrogen fertilizer currently leads to significant environmental problems, including water pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, while its production and distribution pose economic and geopolitical challenges.
