New ‘Lord of the Rings’ Director Rejects ‘Politically Correct’ Casting

Andy Serkis, director of the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, has stated that his project will not conform to what he describes as “politically correct” casting practices. In an interview with the BBC, Serkis emphasized that diversity in the film will be incorporated only where it aligns with the narrative rather than being pursued for its own sake. His comments come amid ongoing debates over representation in adaptations of classic works, particularly those rooted in Western mythology and folklore. Serkis, best known for his portrayal of Gollum in Peter Jackson's acclaimed Lord of the Rings trilogy, explained that J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional world draws heavily from Norse mythology and Northern European traditions. Despite this, Serkis maintained that his interpretation of the material will remain faithful to the source while making decisions based on storytelling needs. The director’s stance contrasts with his earlier views on diversity in Hollywood. During a 2018 interview with Radio Times, Serkis spoke positively about the industry’s push for inclusive casting. He cited his role in Black Panther as a pivotal moment in understanding the experiences of minority actors on set. At the time, he recalled director Ryan Coogler noting that the film marked the first time he had directed a scene featuring two white actors, highlighting the shift in representation within the industry. Serkis’s current position appears to reflect a nuanced view of representation, balancing respect for the original text with contemporary sensibilities. While he acknowledges the importance of diversity, he insists that it must serve the story rather than being imposed upon it.
