New Jersey mother allegedly drunk when boat hit channel marker on Memorial Day, killing her son

A New Jersey woman faces multiple charges after allegedly operating a boat while intoxicated, leading to a collision with a channel marker on Memorial Day that resulted in the death of her 28-year-old son. Jennifer L. Pearson, 59, was charged with death by vessel, operating a vessel under the influence, reckless operation of a vessel, operating a vessel without a Boating Safety Certificate, and failure to maintain a proper lookout. The incident occurred on May 29 near the Brant Beach Yacht Club in Long Beach, within Barnegat Bay. The collision happened around 5:45 p.m. when Pearson’s 23-foot center console boat struck a channel marker. Her son, Gunnar Pearson, 28, and his girlfriend were thrown into the water. According to charging documents obtained by NJ101.5, Gunnar was taken to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. Four other individuals sustained minor injuries and were treated at local medical facilities. Pearson voluntarily turned herself in to the New Jersey State Police Troop “C” Tuckerton Station on August 19. Authorities confirmed that Pearson’s blood alcohol content was between 0.09 and 0.12, exceeding the legal limit of 0.08. She reportedly admitted to consuming two alcoholic beverages earlier that afternoon. Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement noted the presence of alcohol on her breath. Pearson is currently being held at the Ocean County Jail pending further legal proceedings.
