Emergency crews were called to a BJ's Wholesale Club in Ocean Township, New Jersey, shortly after noon when reports surfaced of a partial roof collapse. According to Ocean Township Police Chief Michael Sorrentino and Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden, the call came in at approximately 11:16 a.m. There were 27 people inside the store at the time. Two individuals were initially trapped but managed to escape unharmed. Multiple agencies, including local, county and regional emergency services, responded to the scene. These included Monmouth County’s Urban Search and Rescue team, emergency management personnel, firefighters and medical responders. Search teams used an interior drone and K-9 units to conduct thorough sweeps of the building. All occupants were accounted for, and no injuries were reported. Sorrentino advised residents to stay away from the affected areas near Route 35, Park Avenue and Deal Road during ongoing operations. Golden described the incident as a stark reminder of how rapidly severe weather can lead to hazardous situations. He commended first responders for their efforts in clearing the site despite challenging conditions. The storm system, which has been active since Saturday, delivered rainfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour in some locations. This has raised concerns over potential major flooding along transportation networks, including New York City’s subway system. Flash flood warnings were issued for parts of New York City, New Jersey and Long Island as the storms progressed. Officials have also warned of life-threatening flooding in the region, citing the recent deaths of two men in basement apartments during historic rains in October. Across the country, nearly half a million people remain without power due to the combined effects of severe weather, heavy rainstorms and high temperatures. In New Jersey, emergency managers reported flooded roads and instances of water rescues. Weather forecasts indicated widespread rainfall totals of 2 to 3 inches across much of the Northeast, with some areas possibly experiencing up to 4 inches. Such amounts increase the likelihood of flash flooding, road closures and travel disruptions. In New York, all westbound lanes of the Belt Parkway were temporarily closed due to flooding before being reopened later in the afternoon. The flooding follows days of intense heat and repeated thunderstorms, marking another instance of extreme weather impacting the region. Emergency officials warned that saturated ground and further downpours could exacerbate flooding conditions, especially in low-lying and poorly drained areas.
