Scientists have discovered a new species of harvester ant, named Messor odrysarum, in Bulgaria's Eastern Rhodopes Mountains. The discovery was made by researchers from Sofia University and the University of Wrocław. The ant is part of the Messor genus, known for collecting seeds in arid regions. The species was formally described in the journal ZooKeys, increasing the number of recognized Messor species in Bulgaria to nine. The name 'odrysarum' honors the ancient Thracian state of Odrysia. The ants were found in lowland areas up to 647 meters elevation, nesting in oak forests and grasslands. The study also includes a redescription of the queen caste of a related species, M. oertzeni.
