A drone carrying an explosive device was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany following a security incident that temporarily halted flights. According to German police, airport staff identified the unmanned aerial vehicle near an Ukrainian cargo plane operated by Antonov Airlines. The drone was equipped with an unknown explosive mechanism, prompting authorities to deploy a robot to safely remove its detonator. The incident led to the diversion of several flights, while police confirmed they had recovered the drone. The disruption began after an unidentified flying object was spotted over the airport late into the night. In addition to the drone, another suspicious item was found on the ground. Authorities closed the southern runway where the item was located for further investigation, while the northern runway was reopened later. According to reports from the German newspaper Bild, the drone was discovered near the Ukrainian Antonov aircraft, which became evident in footage taken during the removal of the detonator. Later, a different cargo plane, reportedly belonging to DHL, encountered an unknown object approximately six kilometers away from the airport. Despite this encounter, the aircraft reportedly landed safely at Hanover Airport, where minor damage was detected on its front section. German police confirmed that the second unidentified flying object collided with the cargo plane before landing in Hanover. A spokesperson from the Ministry of the Interior stated that the plane should have landed in Leipzig but had to abort the landing. It then struck the object and landed safely, though no additional information was disclosed. Police described the incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport as a "security incident," emphasizing there was no threat to the public. Investigations into the incident are being conducted jointly by the State Prosecutor’s Office in Dresden and the police counter-terrorism and extremism unit. Officials have not ruled out political motives, given the airport's status as critical infrastructure.
