Three swimmers drowned by a turtle in Croatia

A series of unusual attacks on swimmers near the Croatian coast has prompted concern among local authorities and marine biologists. On Tuesday, several beachgoers reported being bitten by sea turtles off the coast between Kaštel Kambelovac and Kaštel Lukšić. The incidents involved multiple swimmers who were injured in their legs and upper parts of their legs. Three individuals, two adults and one child, required medical attention due to the injuries, with some cases necessitating surgical intervention. The behavior of the sea turtles was described as atypical by experts. Dr. sc. Pero Tutman, a specialist at the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries in Split, noted that such aggressive actions are not typical for these protected marine animals. “This is completely unusual,” he stated, explaining that sea turtles are not predatory and primarily consume other organisms. They lack teeth but possess powerful jaws and beaks capable of crushing shells. Sea turtles have few natural predators, mainly large white sharks, which are rare in the Adriatic Sea. Their primary defense mechanism is flight, avoiding humans and boats by diving deep when they detect human presence. According to Dr. Tutman, sea turtles typically retreat rather than attack unless they feel threatened or cornered. It remains unclear whether the same individual turtle was responsible for similar incidents last year on Čiovo. Experts from organizations such as the Blue Sky Institute suggest that the behavior observed is likely a defensive reaction rather than an act of aggression or hunting. They believe the turtles might have felt threatened in shallow waters, confined in corners, or defending their territory. This interpretation aligns with the general understanding that sea turtles avoid contact with humans whenever possible. Authorities have issued advice to swimmers to maintain a safe distance from sea turtles. If encountered, individuals should avoid touching, feeding, or approaching them. It is recommended to ensure a clear path for the turtles to reach open water and never block their escape routes. In case of an injury, immediate action is advised: rinse the wound with clean water and seek medical assistance promptly due to the risk of infection. Local officials have emphasized the importance of public awareness regarding the behavior of sea turtles and the need for respectful interaction with marine life. While the exact cause of the recent incidents remains under investigation, the focus is on preventing future encounters through education and caution. As the situation continues to unfold, further research and monitoring will be essential to better understand and manage interactions between humans and these vulnerable creatures.
