Australian scientists from the University of Queensland and the University of New South Wales have developed 'paraborgs,' cyborg cockroaches equipped with miniature injection devices and cameras. These insects, known as North Queensland giant burrowing cockroaches, were modified with backpacks containing syringes and cameras to assist search-and-rescue teams in delivering medical aid to disaster victims. Researchers implanted electrodes to control the cockroaches' movements, allowing remote operation. The project aims to provide critical medical interventions in hard-to-reach areas during emergencies such as earthquakes and building collapses. Initial testing showed a 100% success rate in reaching checkpoints and a 72% drug-delivery success rate, increasing to 95% when injections were administered within 15 centimeters of a target.
