In recent days, many residents of Slovenia have been surprised by the loud calls of large flocks of cranes flying over the country in V-shaped formations or circling at high altitudes. Social media has been flooded with videos of these impressive bird migrations. According to the Society for Observation and Study of Birds of Slovenia (DOPPS), this marks the first autumn migration wave of cranes. These birds travel from nesting grounds in northern and eastern Europe to wintering areas in Spain and France. Last year, 86,461 cranes were observed in 721 flocks in Slovenia, which is fewer than in 2022 and 2024 but still aligns with the European trend of increasing crane numbers. While cranes do not nest or winter in Slovenia, experts suggest that due to climate change, it may eventually become possible for young cranes to hatch or for cranes to winter in the region.
