Nearly 100 UK MPs and peers urge cancellation of Israeli settlement event

Over 100 UK Members of Parliament and peers have demanded the cancellation of an Israeli real estate event set to occur in London, citing concerns that it promotes the sale of land in Israeli settlements located in the occupied West Bank. This event, known as the "Great Israeli Real Estate Event," has drawn significant criticism from political figures, civil society organizations, and local authorities. The MPs argue that allowing the event to proceed would contradict the UK's stance on international law and its commitment to opposing the expansion of Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories.

The letter sent to Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper highlights the event's role in facilitating the sale of land that has been taken from Palestinians. Signatories include prominent Labour MPs such as Andy McDonald and Debbie Abrahams, who are co-chairs of the British-Palestine all-party parliamentary group. They emphasized that the event is deeply intertwined with Israel's colonial expansion and that hosting it would undermine the UK's adherence to international law. The letter further states that permitting the event would conflict with the UK government's existing guidelines regarding economic activities related to settlements.

The controversy surrounding the event intensified following discussions between London Mayor Sadiq Khan and the Metropolitan Police. Khan has explicitly condemned any attempts to sell property in the West Bank settlements, labeling them as unjustifiable and illegal under international law. His support for banning the event aligns with broader concerns raised by civil society organizations such as Amnesty International UK, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, and the Muslim Association of Britain, all of whom have called on the UK government to intervene.

The event, which is part of a global series of real estate exhibitions, had initially advertised the sale of properties in Gush Etzion, an Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank. However, after public outcry, the organizers removed references to Gush Etzion from their website. Despite these changes, the event still features a map that does not clearly delineate the boundaries of Gaza and the occupied West Bank, as well as areas like Syria's Golan Heights. The organizers have denied allegations that the event involves the sale of land in the West Bank, dismissing them as baseless and motivated by anti-Israeli sentiments.

The event has faced opposition not only in the UK but also internationally. In New York, where a similar event took place in May, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed strong disapproval of the real estate expo. Additionally, a coalition of Western nations, including the UK, France, Canada, Germany, and Italy, has called for an end to the construction of Israeli settlements, asserting that such actions violate international law. These nations have also imposed sanctions on several firms and an individual linked to the recent surge in settler violence in the West Bank.

As the situation unfolds, there is increasing pressure on the UK government to take decisive action. Civil society organizations continue to advocate for measures that would halt trade and investment supporting the unlawful occupation of Palestinian territories. Meanwhile, legal groups have approached the Metropolitan Police to explore the possibility of blocking the event using a Serious Crime Prevention Order. The outcome of these developments remains uncertain, but they underscore the deepening tensions around the issue of Israeli settlements and their impact on international relations and human rights.
