Achimugu highlighted that the system would also assist in preventing bags from being sent to incorrect destinations by detecting discrepancies during processing. For example, a bag traveling from Lagos to Kano would be flagged if it attempted to board another flight without being properly tracked. Such features aim to reduce the time spent on investigations and increase operator accountability for errors in the baggage-handling chain. Implementation of the RFID system requires collaboration among multiple stakeholders, including the NCAA, FAAN, airlines, and ground handlers. While the technology itself is ready, the NCAA is still conducting consultations with these entities to address potential challenges related to integration, infrastructure, and costs. Airlines have expressed support for the initiative but have raised questions about compatibility with existing systems and the financial burden of upgrading equipment. Some operators have also pointed out that the success of RFID depends on having sufficient baggage-sorting infrastructure at airports. A contractor named Aviation 360 Solutions has outlined plans to install multiple scanning points at key locations such as baggage sorting areas and aircraft-loading zones, creating a digital trail for each bag’s movement. The NCAA has stated that the project is expected to begin later this year, with the goal of significantly reducing one of the aviation industry’s most common passenger complaints. Achimugu acknowledged that the implementation will require close coordination between all involved parties, noting that the NCAA does not control airport infrastructure and therefore relies on the cooperation of other stakeholders. He praised the involvement of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, led by Minister Festus Keyamo, and the proactive leadership of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Managing Director of FAAN. These efforts, he said, signal the start of a new era in Nigeria’s civil aviation sector, focusing on enhanced passenger services and operational efficiency.
