The 2026 Canadian Junior Boys Championship has begun its competition at Wascana Country Club in Regina, Saskatchewan, marking a significant return of a national golf tournament to the province after nearly a decade. The event commenced on August 11 and runs through Friday, August 14, drawing together the nation's top under-19 male golfers for a series of challenging rounds. This year's tournament represents the first time since 2018 that a national-level golf championship has been held in Saskatchewan, with Wascana Country Club serving as the venue. Wascana Country Club has a rich history of hosting major golfing events, including the 2018 CP Women’s Open, where Canadian star Brooke Henderson claimed victory. The club's reputation for quality course design and exceptional hospitality makes it an ideal location for such a prestigious event. Brian Lee, director of Golf Saskatchewan, emphasized the importance of hosting national tournaments in the province, stating that it offers an excellent platform to highlight both the region's golf facilities and its welcoming nature. He noted that whenever possible, efforts should be made to bring high-profile events to Saskatchewan. It allows regional competitors to familiarize themselves with the layout without the need for extensive travel. Aricin Franklin, a Saskatchewan golfer, expressed his appreciation for the convenience of competing closer to home. He mentioned that previous tournaments required long-distance travel, often involving flights, whereas this event allowed him to participate within a shorter driving distance. Winning the Canadian Junior Boys Championship carries substantial weight beyond mere recognition. According to Rogan Doyle, director of the Canadian Junior Boys Championship, the tournament winner receives an exemption into the 2027 U.S. Junior Amateur, a highly respected event organized by the United States Golf Association. Additionally, the champion earns entry into the 122nd Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship, with the eventual winner of that event gaining access to the Canadian Open. These opportunities can significantly influence a player's career trajectory, offering pathways to higher levels of competition and exposure. This year, five Saskatchewan-based golfers successfully navigated the 36-hole qualifying rounds, securing their spots in the final round scheduled for Friday. Joining Franklin are Ryan Mosher and Oliver Matyczuk from Saskatoon, Austin Nesbitt from Pilot Butte, and Matty Schmiess from Swift Current. Franklin noted that while there have been instances in recent years where local players advanced to the final stages, this particular showing represents the largest number of Saskatchewan participants in several years.
