Nainar Nagenthran accuses TVK-led government of bringing ‘religious politics’ into Assembly

Nainar Nagenthran, the state president of the BJP, has accused the Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay of introducing "religious politics" into the legislative assembly, claiming this undermines the dignity and neutrality of the institution. The allegations came after Mr. Nagenthran posted comments on the social media platform X, criticising the current administration for what he described as inappropriate religious influence within the Assembly. According to reports, Mr. Nagenthran specifically targeted Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar, accusing him of publicly aligning with a specific religion while presiding over the Assembly. He pointed out that the Speaker had sought reservations for members of that religious group while seated in his official capacity. Mr. Nagenthran argued that the role of the Speaker requires strict impartiality, free from caste or religious bias. Additionally, he raised concerns about the conduct of the Chief Minister, stating that Mr. Vijay has portrayed the TVK government as one that prioritises minority interests. This claim was based on the actions of several ministers who have reportedly brought religious references into their speeches and proceedings during Assembly sessions. Among these instances, Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson was noted for arriving with a rosary during the budget presentation, discussing his Christian faith, and quoting Bible verses in the House. Mr. Nagenthran clarified that his criticism did not target individuals' private religious beliefs but rather the impact of expressing such beliefs in formal legislative settings. He warned that such practices could erode public confidence in the Assembly's ability to function as a neutral body representing all citizens equally. The controversy centers around the perceived shift towards religious identity within the political framework of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Mr. Nagenthran called upon both the Speaker and the ministers to avoid bringing personal issues related to caste or religion into the Assembly, urging them instead to maintain the institution's integrity and impartiality. The accusations follow a series of incidents where religious symbols and references have been increasingly visible in the Assembly. These include the presence of religious items during official functions and the inclusion of religious quotes in speeches. Such occurrences have sparked debates about the appropriate boundaries between personal beliefs and public governance. The Tamil Nadu government has yet to formally respond to these allegations.
